Today we are going to learn about Ruth and what it means to be a friend.
A friend is a loyal, sympathetic, kind, understanding, and trustworthy person. Or so the dictionary says. But what is a covenant friend like Ruth? What we do know is that Ruth was a real friend to Naomi. She gave up her life to be with her. So how do you know a person is a covenant friend or a friend for a season? The word Friend is used so loosely in today’s world. But we will look to Proverbs for the great advice.
Low Maintenance ⋅ Loyal • Respectful • TrustWorthy • Accepting
∗Loyalty demonstrated by sacrifice and intimacy – knowledge not shared by others∗
Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity- A great example of this is shown in 1Samuel where we see David and Jonathan’s relationship. After Jonathans passed away David took care of his disabled child. This is a true friend. Which brings me to the question of Godparents…. Are they covenant relationships (people you would trust to raise your children if you passed? or just friends that are cool?
Proverbs 16:28 A perverse man spreads strife and one who gossips separate intimate friends.- That was a whole mouth full! A covenant friend is not going to allow someone to spread lies about you. They would not allow your character to be assassinated. They stand in the gap when you are no there.
Proverbs 13:20 He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. – How does that saying go birds of a feather flock together… I mean truth be told most people need only look at the company they keep to see where they are in life. How about you take a look at your circle, then look at your goals in life. If they aren’t adding to each other…. it may be time to make some changes.
Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend [who corrects out of love and concern] But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful[because they serve his hidden agenda]. Let’s keep it 100… you might not like what your true friend has to say. Or want to hear what you did wrong! BUT we all know its better to hear it from someone who loves us then to be encouraged in the wrongdoing that will harm us in the long run.
Well I hope I helped you to recognize some characteristics of a covenant friend. Did you read the story of Ruth ( if you haven’t its the Book of Ruth in the Bible)? What is your favorite thing about Ruth?
